Feadship Predator

In 2008, the Dutch shipbuilder Feadship launched what is arguably its most innovative yacht to date, the 239-foot Predator. It only takes a quick glance at Predator’s menacing bow and aggressive lines to understand why the yacht was named as it was. Predator’s groundbreaking design is a triumph of both form and function. The distinctive reverse bow slices through the water—rather than pushing through it the way displacement hulls do—thus allowing a top speed of more than 25 knots. One could argue this bow design also bests more traditional shapes because it eliminates much of the up-and-down pitching motion that causes seasickness among passengers. (Some credit must also be given to Predator’s nonretractable Quantum zero-speed stabilizers, which cancel out most of the yacht’s side-to-side rolling motion.)

Predator has four MTU 16V 595 TE90 engines that produce a combined 23,000 brake horsepower. To accommodate these beasts, Feadship built its tallest-ever engine room for a yacht. Predator’s draft is also notable: It measures just over 12 feet, making this the deepest hull built to date at Feadship’s De Vries yard.

Bannenberg Designs, of , crafted Predator’s owner and guest areas in conformation with specific weight restrictions, so as not to affect the yacht’s speed. To this end, Bannenberg employed marble laminates alongside light-toned Karelian birch with dark accents of Macassar ebony and zebrano. The company also commissioned furniture made from lightweight materials for use throughout the yacht.

To the dismay of some yacht watchers, early photos of Predator revealed a dull, iron-gray hull that made the vessel look more like a surfaced submarine than a luxury yacht. But just after the boat’s sea trials, Feadship removed what turned out to be a protective Awlgrip coating, revealing a rich blue hull with accents in white and blood red—appropriate for a true predator.

Christensen’s Latest Luxury Liner

For many years, Christensen has made its name on custom-series motoryachts that share the same hull and propulsion systems. But the Washington-based shipyard has really excelled at incorporating the “custom” into the series. It has long abandoned the cookie-cutter approach adopted by other series builders. Each new Christensen over the last five years has been unique, ranging from the extremely ornate Casino Royale, with its richly crafted interior (including glass etchings of Bond girls in the foyer) to the elegant but simple Primadonna. Both yachts recently sold for more than the owners paid for them, a testament to Christensen’s reputation in the market.

Odessa, launched last summer, is yet another departure for Christensen. Its black hull and metallic silver superstructure give the yacht a futuristic appeal, and the raised bulwark along the length of the yacht gives it a more linear profile. Christensen also widened the side decks by six feet to give the European owners more room to roam. The 160-foot motoryacht was also designed to roam the globe, with a transatlantic range of 4,000 miles and top speed of 18 knots. The series approach has allowed Christensen to work out any kinks in the engineering, so its yachts are extremely reliable.

Odessa’s interior was designed around the minimalistic furniture of Armani Casa. Christensen’s design team consulted extensively with Armani on the interior, surrounding the decor with rich, dark hardwoods, muted fabrics, and contrasting stonework such as white onyx and black obsidian. Like the exterior, the overall impression is one of residing in a luxury apartment in or , though the ocean view is unrivaled. The large rectangular hot tub on the sundeck, a Christensen signature for Odessa, makes the view even more exceptional.

Franck Muller Aeternitas Mega 4: Ups State Of World’s Most Complex Watch

Another year and another “world’s most complicated .” Also the 4th in the coveted Franck MullerAeternitas series of high complex watches that are either amazing looking or ludicrous looking – depending on how you see it. The financially troubled brand is putting the finishing touches on this limited series (of no specific disclosed amount) (even though the first of them was already finished and presented to an American collector recently at a dinner). Inside are a whopping 36 complications! I am not going to list them all here, but you can consult with the image in the gallery below for a spec sheet of the various functions that it has. 25 of the 36 complications are visible on the dial. Franck Muller is surprisingly brief on the details. We don’t know materials or size of the yet. I would imagine that it is on the larger side though. The movement has 1,483 parts to it! Wow, talk about complex and fragile. The took 5 years to design.

Some functions include, but are not limited to, a monopusher split-second chronograph (no idea how that is done with one button), a 1000 year calendar, very accurate equation of time (between solar and clock time), complex sonnerie chiming functions, multiple timezones, moon phase indicator, and of course, more. The obvious competitor to the Aeternitas Mega 4 is the recently released Jaeger-LeCoultre Hybris Mechanica Grande Sonnerie . While the Hybris Mechanica only has 25 complications, it is arguably more pleasing to the eyes. Plus, for a bit less price you get three watches and a fancy safe.

The Franck Muller Aeternitas 4 is the high horology equivalent of a fancy Texas Instruments graphing calculator. Sure it does a lot and it gets us mechanical nerds excited, but it isn’t going to get you any action from the ladies (but sharing with them the price tag of $2.7 million might).

Escape to Casa de Sierra Nevada in San Miguel de Allende

There is a certain type of traveler who will scoff when you tell them that you love San Miguel de Allende, a city smack in the middle of Mexico. “Oh, that’s where the gringos go,” they’ll say, and it’s true. There are many US and Canadian retirees that have made this Silver City their , and in fact it’s been a magnet for north Americans since just after World War II. The attraction was the ability to study at two different art schools in town where GI Bill dollars went very far, Or perhaps it’s better to call that the justification, the attraction was the beauty of this town, which is well-preserved – an attraction that exists to this day, drawing gringas like me, international tourists besides, and not a few Mexico City weekenders.

Let that certain type of traveler scoff, for San Miguel is a confection of a city, with brightly painted buildings, and old iron lamps and absurdly narrow and steep cobblestoned streets, the cobblestones themselves streaked with color. There are plenty of things to do here, but I think the best itinerary is just to wander around those streets from early morning to late night, interrupted with a coffee from El Petit Four bakery and a hand churned ice cream from a street vendor in the afternoon.

Your luxurious base of operations should be Casa de Sierra Nevada, a hotel with 37 rooms and suites, spread across six historic mansions which date from the 16th to the 18th century. These six buildings are all within a few steps of one another – three are connected by courtyard – with the exception of Casa Parque, which is a few blocks away in a former 17th century fort. (This building is said to be haunted, but when I visited I saw nothing supernatural.)

Each mansion has its own flavor and room design, borrowing from different eras of San Miguel’s design, and, as is the case in almost every hotel with unique room design, return guests become passionately attached to a room in a certain building. I personally became incredibly attached to the newest part of hotel, Casa Palma, which was gut renovated and has spacious suites that are hard to find fault with – a bed that’s easy to sink into and difficult to leave, a sitting room with a carefully selected library of interesting books – my shelf had Hillary Clinton’s biography and a novel by Dennis Lehane. I also took much longer to get bathed and dressed in the morning than I otherwise would, given that the bathroom has a indoor shower, outdoor shower and a deep, pounded metal bathtub, a private patio with plunge pool.

The presidential suite is also in this part of the hotel, and its attached roof deck has an amazing view of San Miguel and especially its church. The hotel occasionally uses this roof deck for evening cocktail parties when the suite is unoccupied – but if it’s empty, any guest can unofficially take in the view from the deck, something that’s especially nice to do at night when the stars compete with the lights of the town.

A caution for the noise sensitive: these mansions are right in the thick of where people actually live – a school is not far away and if you relax in your private plunge pool, during the week you can hear the sounds of vigorous school yard play – so this is place that tends more towards immersion than isolation, if immersion can be said to happen all in a plunge pool on a private patio.

Casa de Sierra Nevada offers two worth distractions from strolling San Miguel’s streets: one is its cooking school, Sazon. The classes here are demonstration style, with sophisticated use of cameras, monitors and mirrors — usually focusing on Mexican regional food – with lots of sampling but little hands-on cooking for students. The hotel’s Laja Spa is small (three treatment rooms) and simple, but also comprehensive. There are basic treatments, but I especially like the creativity of a menu that includes the “Heroes Healing Poultice”, which is a massage with a steamed cotton bag filled with local herbs.

Andaz Wall Street Housewarming Party

Usually a “soft launch” is a quiet affair with friends and employers gathered for a big round of encouragement smiles, trying menu items and testing out drink concoctions. Someone forgot to tell that to Hyatt, who gathered a crowd of 300 to toast their highly anticipated new Andaz hotel in Manhattan.

Andaz is a new concept from the hotel giant with locations in West Hollywood and  Andaz Wall Street is the first in , with another on Fifth Avenue to open this spring. The Wall Street location officially opened to the public on Jan. 18.

At the housewarming, the restaurant, Wall & Water, was packed to the gills as guests gathered around marble “bars” for tastings of smoked salmon, arugula salad, grilled scallops and other bites being cooked before their eyes in the dining room.

Downstairs at , guests could try a choice of several different drink concoctions including a signature bourbon drink served flaming. Instead of a traditional bar with mixologists working their magic on one side and guests on the other, the lounge is laid out with a series of square-marble islands that break down the wall between guest and server, giving the bar an air of a high-end kitchen. Alchemy, a duo behind several successful speakeasies, designed the cocktail menu with an appropriately hip retro flair.

At right, Dr. Oz’s daughter, Daphne Oz, with Lily Cowles, Natasha Lennard and Elizabeth Cordry.

Hublot Gold King Power Tourbillon GMT Watch

Hublot strikes hard with a less-than-innovative, but still satisfying large Big Bang with a host of luxury features. First is the new type of gold alloy used for most of the case called “King Gold.” It is basically what looks to be rose gold with less rose in it. Think of it as a hint of white gold as it has 5% platinum in it. Interesting that Hublot is not the only brand this year to make up a new gold. A. Lange & Sohne have released their Honey Gold alloy as well.

The Hublot Gold King Power Tourbillon GMT is also the first to have a tourbillon as well as a second timezone and retrograde date indicator. Does this really feel innovative? Again, no – but you do have “technical” bragging rights. The case is large at 48mm wide in King Gold, titanium, ceramic, composite resin, and rubber. The dial has a nice look in theory, but a lot of it likely gets lost as the tones as similar. Meaning the is not super easy to read. Still, it looks pretty sharp, and that is what Hublot watches of this caliber are going for. In The dial is a mix of a real dial with hour indicators on it and the exposed movement. You have a view of the tourbillon as well as some of the major gears that power the . Price will of course be expensive by this is part of a limited edition of just 28 pieces. Hublot collectors are getting giddy as I speak. More details closer to release at Baselworld 2010 in March. It might sound as though I am speaking both negatively and positively at the same time out the – this is true. I am irritated that Hublot does not need to try hard anymore to have nice watches, but am happy that they have such a winning formula.

Some Great Drinks to Try in 2010

I’ve forever been a soda lover. For whatever reason, my beverage refrigerator is usually filled with all sorts of drinks, many of which I haven’t ever sampled in the past.

Anything can somehow earn my interest as soon as it finds its way onto store shelves, and I’ve perpetually been a pioneer in this area. While the majority of new drinks that I try end up being flops, there are always some which end up tasting very well.

The following are 4 drinks that may appeal to you if you have the same type of palette that I do. They are all a bit different in composition, thus hopefully one among them can end up turning into a fixture in your samplings when it comes to these liquid treats.

The main drink that strikes my mind could be a recent favorite of mine. I’ve never been big on energy drinks, but Red Bull has released a new cola that is not in fact an energy drink. It does possess a touch of caffeine from natural coffee beans, but it’s less than 1/2 of the caffeinated levels found in one serving of Red Bull and the drink happens to taste nice.

A second one I would recommend sampling is one of the carbonated green tea sodas by Steaz. The drinks are slightly laced with sugar, but these blends are mixed with green tea, making them much healthier than a normal cola.

If you don’t enjoy your drinks carbonated, then you may be fascinated by one of the many flavors of the new O2 water, as the drink is quite similar to Vitamin Water, except it’s sweetened while not being colored. It’s essentially a conglomerate of water, organic, and some natural flavors to round it out. Extremely flavorful in my belief.

Finally, a new kind of water making its place in the world is coconut water, which is completely natural, sweet, & extremely nutritious. Check it out if you don’t mind some water with a little bit of a milky composition.

All of those do the job at the end of the day, and I am certain that my drink refrigerator is guaranteed to be filled with some more of those as soon as I finish them.
